To bring bite-sized chunks of the very best of opera to diverse venues and locations, both rural and urban. For those who’ve never considered opera or thought that it ‘wasn’t for them’, we aim to prove how fun, engaging and entertaining it can be with an ‘introduction to opera’ package of 5 fully staged opera scenes (lasting approx 1 hour). Rather less intimidating than committing to a full 3-4 hour opera! We will also provide bespoke events for private, corporate or public audiences. A large part of the inspiration for this project is to persuade people that opera can be for everyone, by stripping away traditional performance conventions and inaccessible jargon which can make people think it’s just ‘not for them’. By focusing on dramatic honesty, we hope to benefit and inspire a new demographic of opera fans.
The idea for Orchard Opera came about in the pear orchard of my granny’s house in Sedlescombe. Emma Sheehy (Artistic Director), suggested that it would be a fantastic space for an outdoor creative experience of some kind, and thus the seed was planted. Our aim is to bring bite-sized chunks of the very best of opera to diverse venues and locations. At this unprecedentedly challenging time for the arts, we feel strongly that we must create our own opportunities for performance, and make it available to audiences in a dynamic and flexible way. We believe the future of performing arts lies with small, flexible companies like ours, which can bring performances to their audience wherever they might be; remote rural locations, your back yard, or city based independent venues. We greatly appreciate your support for this, Orchard Opera’s first step into a new and uncertain post-covid world, which will hold opportunities as well as challenges for creative artists.
